Federal Pell Grant Eligibility Criteria

Many would-be students are wondering how they can afford to attend college these days. And the fact is that without student loans and grants, it would be almost impossible for the average person. Not everyone has a hundred thousand dollars saved up in advance to pay for a high quality education.

However, don’t let that stop you from pursuing your goal to earn a college degree. Let’s look more closely at grant eligibility that may entitle you to receive financial aid– namely the Pell Grant program.

<img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-14128" style="margin: 7px 11px;" title="bigstock_Success_4111301" src="http://womensgrantsource.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/bigstock_Success_4111301-300x300.jpg" alt="Federal Pell Grant Eligibility Criteria"width="240" height="240" />If you are thinking of going to college, or you are the parent of a college student, you might want to see if you qualify for any federal government grants.

One of the grants used the most often is the Pell Grant. However, to get student aid of this kind you must meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria.

The Pell Grant program helps assist students who are undergraduates, and who are from low income families. Please, don’t dismiss this thought without some follow through, so don’t count out this grant before filing the application.

Why? Because the fact is that even if you don’t qualify for the full amount, it doesn’t mean you won’t qualify for part of it. What you think is low income and what the government classifies as ‘low income’ may be two different things.

Facts About Pell Grant Financial Aid

A Pell Grant is not a loan and does not have to be paid back

The maximum award for 2012 is $5,550

The amount you receive depends on your financial need and school cost

An application must be filled out to see if you qualify

Must have at least a GED or pass the ATB test (ability to benefit)*

(Or, have at least six credit hours completed)*

(Or, already be enrolled as a student working toward a degree)*

To fill out the Federal Pell Grant application you can find the Pell application here. Once you do this you are on your way to finding out if you qualify for Pell Grant financial aid. Student loans are important, and help many students to receive an education, but grants relieve the pressure of having to repay the money.

Some changes, to help people meet grant eligibility, happened in 2011. First, more of the previous years questions were skipped on the form, and applicants were allowed to make a higher income.

Secondly, a new regulation was established so that schools would have to disburse the Pell Grant funds by the seventh day of the school session. There is more information, in greater detail, about the Pell Grant on the government website.

Who Determines The Financial Need?

The financial need is determined by the U.S. Department of Education. Congress has given them a standard formula by which to evaluate the financial information that you supply on the application form.

This formula consists of the student’s income, the parent’s income, and assets. They also take into consideration the size of the family, and if any other children are attending post-secondary institutions. Once you have filled out your application you will soon receive a Student Aid Report, which will notify you if you are eligible.

Unusual Circumstances For Grant Application

There are some cases and instances where your financial aid can be revoked, however if you follow procedures you can usually get them back. For example, if you lost your aid because you were convicted of drug use, you can get aid restored if you pass two unannounced drug tests.

These test have to be administered by someone that uses the criteria established by the Department of Education. Also, if you were incarcerated for a sexual offense you can apply once you have completed a certain period of time.

Citizenship status is a problem for some students. You can contact the financial aid office at your school to see what your options are.

Even if you don’t feel you are eligible for the Pell Grant, be sure and fill out the grant application because you may be eligible for non federal aid from states and even some private institutions.

Using the Pell Grant Program For Online Universities

Many students today are getting their degrees by attending online universities. Most universities are fully accredited and your degree will be accepted by all employers. The legislation for the Higher Education Act is the umbrella the Pell Grant falls under. As mentioned earlier, this money does not have to be paid back.

These grants helped over 5.4 million people with their school finances last year and seven of the schools awarded money were for-profit schools. It is reassuring to know that online universities such as the University of Phoenix, DeVry University, and Kaplan University received almost two million in Pell Grant funds.

Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria may be a little strict as far as income goes, but the formula for selecting the applicants reaches a lot further than just income. Applying for a Pell Grant is just the first step in obtaining finances for your education.

Filling out and submitting the grant eligibility application is free and the income you submit will have certain allowances that will be subtracted from it. This will make your net assets lower than you may think, possibly helping you to be eligible.

In conclusion the essence of this article is to help you know where to find the grant application, and where to find the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria if you have questions this article doesn’t answer. Those two links are:

Free Application – http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

Facts/Criteria- http://www2.ed.gov/programs/fpg/index.html

Getting an education is more important than ever today because it’s those with a good education that get the best jobs that are available. When starting your search for student aid, start by applying for the Pell Grant. From there you can see what other types of grants you may qualify for. Don’t forget to also inquire about scholarship programs at the particular school and student loan programs to help fill any gaps in your finances.

Are you a woman age 50 or older who believes that her chance to get a college degree has passed her by and there are no college grants for women over 50? Would you go to college if you knew you could receive financial aid to help you pay for it? This article sets out to show you that college grants for women over 50 are available right now, where to find them and how to get your share.

College grants for women over 50 are special financial gifts so that women can attend a college or university in order to earn a degree. Grants are never repaid. Grants are available through private companies and government agencies for the sole purpose of giving financial aid to women who want to go to college for the first time or to return to college to finish a degree. College grants for women over 50 are grants that specifically target women over 50 years of age.

Women have always worked, but not always in high paying careers. Back in the “good ol’ days” young women worked until they found a husband to take care of them. My, have times changed! Both single and married women work because they have no choice in today’s economy. Women 50 and over have raised their families and now want to enter college for the first time or return to college to finish a degree or earn an advanced degree. These women are searching for college grants for women over 50.

Where are the college grants for women over 50?

We found five of many college grants for women over 50.

college grants for women over 50

The Talbots Women’s Scholarship Fund is for older women who want to pursue a college degree. It must be at least10 years since the women attended college. You must be enrolled in a technical college or university to be eligible. The top five winners of the scholarship win $10,000 each while 50 other women are given $1,000 scholarships.

AARP gives college grants for older women over 50 to give them a chance to fulfill the dream of a college education. AARP awards 100 older women scholarships in the amounts of $500 to $5,000.

Jeanette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund has a vision to help older women eliminate poverty from their lives through a college education. The foundation awards 500 scholarships per year to women age 35 or older with low income and enrolled in an accredited technical or vocational school and are pursuing an associates or bachelors degree.

The American Association of University Women offers college grants for older women over 50 who had to leave college to raise families and work.

These good will organizations are not the only ones that offer college grants for older women over 50. There are two ways to find more of this specialized financial aid for college. The Internet has grant and scholarship sites with huge databases full of companies offering money for college. All you do is type in your personal data and the site searches the database for grants and scholarships for which you may be eligible. You will then fill out an application for each foundation.

You may also visit the financial aid office of the college or university of your choice. They will help you find grants and scholarships and help you fill out applications. They will be glad to help you find college grants for older women over 50.

As you can see, it is very possible for you to realize your dream of a college education. There are companies and foundations willing to help you with your biggest obstacle to earning a degree. Lack of finances is the biggest reason most people never earn a college degree. Now it’s possible with college grants for women over 50.

College scholarships for women are specially earmarked to be awarded to women who wish to start or continue a college education. If you are a woman who feels trapped in a minimum-wage job that’s not meeting the needs of your family, but you don’t have the finances to attend college for the chance to make more money, then you are a prime candidate.

Many ask why there are college scholarships for women since we live in a world where men and women have equal opportunity. The fact is, women are not on equal footing with men when it comes to opportunities in certain fields.

Women are believed to be unable to master traditionally male-dominated careers such as science and engineering. Even those women who have entered these fields and have contributed successfully are paid less than their male co-workers.

College Scholarships for Women in Mathematics and Science

College Scholarships for Women

Corporations have recognized the fact that women are very capable of entering fields in math, science and engineering and have set up college scholarships for women to encourage them to enter these fields. UNCF-MERCK Science Research Scholarships and Fellowships, Access Your Future Scholarship and ASEE/NSF Corporate Research Fellowships in Engineering, plus many others, recognize the need to help women further their education in traditionally male fields.

Unfortunately, these scholarships generally target young women just graduating from high school, rather than the non-traditional woman returning to college after several years of absence or who never attended college. Not to worry—there are college scholarships for women in every field available for women ages 18 to 50 and beyond.

College Scholarships for Women in the Arts

Math and science not your thing? Are you more of the creative type of woman? Then you’ll be glad to know that there are college scholarships for women who are interested in the arts. Artistic organizations such as the National Sculpture Society Inc., Union League Civic and Arts Foundation, College Art Association and the Blanche E. Coleman Trust are just some of the organizations that offer college scholarships to women, to name a few.

How and Where to Find College Scholarships for Women

The Internet has made it possible to find college scholarships for women very easily. Scholarship sites make it simple to find the scholarships you need to get your degree. It’s as simple as going to a site such as Scholarships.com, plugging in your personal data, and the site searches and presents to you every possible scholarship in its database for which you may be qualified.

Then it’s just a matter of filling out applications and submitting them to get money for tuition, books, a computer, software and other college supplies. Some college scholarships for women even pay for living expenses and daycare costs.

If you have decided to return to college to get your degree, the last thing you need is to worry about how you’re going to pay for it. College scholarships will decrease your need for student loans that will make your degree seem like a waste of time when you start paying the loans back. Even if you have very little time to complete scholarship applications, it’s worth it if you receive a $2,500 scholarship renewable every year. That saves you $10,000 plus interest in student loans. Applying for college scholarships for women is worth the time and effort!

Another way to search out college scholarships for women is to contact the financial aid office at your college or university. They are very familiar and current with every scholarship available. They can help you fill out your first scholarship applications and submit them for you. When you get a scholarship, your college or university receives the funds. They will be glad to help.

There are hundreds of college scholarships for women who want to get a college education. They are easy to find with simple applications to fill out. Some may require that you write an essay, but you can find help with that, too. Now you know that it is very possible that one of those college scholarships for women is quite possibly waiting to be awarded to YOU.

Nursing Scholarships and Grants – Financial Aid Sources

It’s been said that education is ‘the great equalizer’. Those with a college degree have more opportunities for making life more comfortable, in terms of income.

Degrees in the medical field, particularly nursing, can allow you to earn a high income AND fulfill your passion to ‘make a difference’.

Individuals and groups who support low-income, yet deserving students have many programs to extend monetary support to those entering the medical profession.

Financial aid to attend nursing school comes in many forms, and grants make up only a part: loans, grants, scholarship programs, and work-study programs.

Private and non-profit groups, plus the government, ensure that a majority of the graduating secondary students will have access to an institution for higher learning.

In other words, if you genuinely want to enter the nursing field, but don’t have the financial means to pay for your education, financial aid is plentiful, if you are persistent and flexible.

Financial aid for women to attend nursing school

Some government organizations require students to serve in the country where they received their scholarship grants, based on the number of years that they received the financial aid assistance.

For some the payback is in the form of working to open new opportunities for students so that they could have access to college education and to higher earnings potential later.

Nursing Scholarships and Grants – Where to Apply

The very first grant program to apply for is the PELL grant. The PELL program is available to women and men who meet income and family contribution criteria.

Another excellent source for nursing scholarships and grants? The school where you will be attending. Some of these are not well publicized, but a school guidance counselor or financial aid officer should be able to help.

Most branches of the US Military award nursing school scholarships and grants under a work study arrangement. Typically, you must agree to work in the military as a nurse for an agreed upon period of time after you have completed your studies and training.
